Become a Driving Instructor – Course Profile
Overview
This programme provides a structured pathway to becoming a qualified driving instructor through the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Training is delivered through a structured online learning system, supported by practical development as you progress.
Your Journey to Qualification
Step 1 – Theory & Knowledge (Part 1)
You will develop your understanding of:
- The Highway Code and road safety
- Hazard perception and risk awareness
- Traffic signs, signals, and regulations
- Driver behaviour and attitudes
- Instructional techniques and learning styles
Training is delivered through structured online modules, allowing flexible study at your own pace.
Step 2 – Driving Ability (Part 2)
This stage focuses on developing your driving to an advanced standard.
You will cover:
- Moving off and stopping safely
- Use of mirrors and observations
- Speed control and road positioning
- Junctions and roundabouts
- Bay parking (forward and reverse)
- Parallel parking
- Pulling up on the right and reversing
- Independent driving and navigation
- Hazard awareness and anticipation
Practical development is provided to support your preparation for the ADI Part 2 test, alongside structured learning.
Step 3 – Instructional Ability (Part 3)
This stage focuses on learning how to teach others effectively.
You will develop:
- Lesson planning and structure
- Identifying and correcting faults
- Risk management and maintaining safety
- Communication and coaching techniques
- Questioning and feedback methods
- Adapting lessons to different learners
- Applying the 17 core teaching competencies

Real-World Experience
As you progress, you may have the opportunity to gain real-world experience working with learners.
This allows you to:
- Apply your training in real situations
- Build confidence as an instructor
- Develop your teaching ability further
Instructor Support Pathway
Instructor College UK may offer trainees the opportunity to progress into an Instructor Support Programme.
This can include:
- Access to learners
- Ongoing mentoring and development
- Business systems and operational support
This pathway is optional and subject to:
- Suitability
- Availability
- A separate agreement
Programme Delivery
The Programme is delivered primarily through structured online learning.
Practical and in-car training elements are introduced at appropriate stages of your development and are provided on a progression basis.
This means:
